A member asked:

I just went to change my tampon. i went through the tampon and into the pad. why does it smell like ammonia and not just a little, but very strong.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Blood breakdown: The ammonia smell is characteristic of rapid bleeding and release of amines which is a breakdown product. After the bleeding is finished make sure that you also don't have a vaginal infection such as bacterial vaginitis.
