Better alternatives: Although naproxen can be safely used, this class of medications is not as good for treating nerve related pain such as shingles. Better treatments are topical lidocaine patches, and prescription pain modulator medications such as gabapentin, pregabalin, nortryptiline, and others. I recommend she see a physician right away to help manage the shingles, and possibly start an anti-viral medication.
