Vagus nerve: The vagus nerve can be activated by bearing down as you would having a bowel movement. This results in increased vagal tone which temporarily slows the heart rate. Making yourself gag by putting your finger in the back of your throat also activates the vagus nerve resulting in transient slowing of the heart rate.
