No or maybe: There is no consistent evidence that metformin helps with weight loss. Studies simply do not back up this statement. Individuals do seem to lose weight while on metformin, but it is not at all clear it's the drug.

Yes but...: While weight loss may occur while taking metformin, weight loss is not usually the reason the medicine is prescribed. The drug does have to be taken under the supervision of a prescribing doctor.
