Costochondritis: The ribs have nerves that travel around your rib cage. You may have an irritation to the nerve. Muscles wrap around the rib cage as well. Could have pulled a muscle, or a contusion- a trauma due to fall or blow to the rib area. Laying down or sitting has no pain likely because of the positional nature of the problem . This usually is a benign thing, resolves by itself. If not see a Dr. in a few.
