6 month old is getting 1st flu shot today. i know she needs 2nd in a month but does the 1st provide any sort of protection?

Yes: There is some protection against the flu after getting one's first flu shot. There will be more protection after getting the second flu shot. Meanwhile, stay away from sick people or crowded places, as the flu is widespread at this time (January 2018) in the US.
