Should not be: with proper local anaesthesia, wisdom tooth removal may be unpleasant (pulling, pushing on jaw), but should not be actively painful

No: With proper anesthesia there should be no pain. There may be some discomfort from the manipulation required to accomplish the surgery, but the surgery itself should not be painful at all. There will be some very manageable discomfort early-on in the healing process.
