No: Strep throat is caused by a strain of strep bacteria. A person can catch strep throat through any activity that ends up putting live strep bacteria into her mouth. HSV1 is a virus that causes cold sores on the lips and around the mouth, but can also cause sores in other places. If a person catches HSV1 for the first time, and it happens to be in the mouth, that first time can cause a sore throat.
