Test Lead Exposure: Eating substances with no nutritional value is called Pica and in children commonly presents as eating dirt. Carries risk of exposure to bacteria, parasites, and environmental toxins e.g. lead. Lead toxicity can cause developmental delay, anemia, and more. See your doctor to test for lead exposure/toxicity and to discuss best methods to modify child’s behavior with respect to eating sand.
