A member asked:

Does an avulsion fracture of the hip stop growth in height?

Not in general: The typical growth plate avulsions that occur around the hip are not from growth plates which add height to an adolescent. The majority of growth in the leg comes from the main growth plates at the ends of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone). The avulsion fractures that occur around the hip come from muscular attachments in the pelvis near the hip, not the femur itself.

No: There are an assortment of avulsion fractures about the pelvis and hip where large muscle groups can avulse or ‘pull-off’ a small piece of bone/ cartilage. Almost all are treated w/rest, crutches for 4-6 weeks....none can stunt growth. Best of Luck!
