Surgery, but why?: First of all, you need to be sure it is a lipoma, there are other things that are similar to lipomas. If it is a lipoma, they are always what is called benign, meaning they are not cancerous and cause no problems, other than sometimes pressure from their size. The only way to get rid of them, is surgery. You should see your doctor to have the lump checked.

Excision: Lipomas are usually surgically excised. Liposuction is an option for some lipomas, but there is a higher incidence of recurrence.

Excision: To fully remove a lipoma every cell has to be removed. Other methods such as liposuction are not reliable in this regard.

Excision: Most lipomas are cut out. Liposuction can make them appear smaller but may have a higher recurrence rate.

Surgical removal: Really, surgical removal is the only good option. Liposuction has been used in the past but the lipomas treated that way often grew back. Depending on the size and location, this may be an office procedure or an outpatient procedure but is rarely more than that. If the entire lipoma is removed, the chance of it recurring is very small. Good luck!

Liposuction: Liposuction can remove enough of the lipoma to make it not visible, but it can regrow. You can also have it excised but that leaves a longer scar - and can also grow back.
