Condom effectiveness: Condoms are highly effective in preventing those STDs transmitted through genital fluids, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. They are less effective (but still helpful) in reducing risk of those transmitted skin-to-skin, like syphilis, herpes, and HPV. You are exactly right: if at risk or otherwise concerned, get examined and tested. Good luck!
