A member asked:

My 82 year old mother had bladder surgery but ended up with having most of her sm intestine removed too (3ft remain) what can be done now?

Dr. Craig Lum answered

3 ft of sm bm: That is roughly how much is needed to continue living, though a slight bit more would have been better. Your mother will need to be on total parenteral nutrition until her small intestine develops enough to help sustain her life, which takes time. I don't want to raise your hopes completely or dash them to the ground, but it WILL NOT BE EASY because of your mother's age.
