Take as directed: Blood clots usually dissolve within a couple of weeks, but that's not the reason to take warfarin. The drug is intended to prevent new clots from forming, especially in deep leg or abdominal veins -- not to dissolve the initial clot that caused pulmonary embolism. Follow your doctor's advice about duration of treatment.

Oftimes they don't dissolve and remain chronic and need to be surgically removed. Coumadin only prevents new clots
