Depends: This would depend on the type of tumor that you are dealing with. A "lipoma" which is a common benign fatty tumor underneath the skin could easily be detected by feel. The less common tumors that may occur in the deep tissues or bones around the hip you would not typically be able to feel. These would need xray, ct or MRI to diagnose.
