A member asked:

Can you tell me if a person had prostate cancer would this be evident from a simple urine test?

Prostate cancer: No. The only way to diagnose prostate cancer is by tissue biopsy of the prostate. The psa blood test is used to determine who gets a biopsy. Most treatable (early stage) prostate cancers cannot be palpated on the digital rectal exam. Urine testing has no role in prostate cancer screening or diagnosis.

Not completely: While urine based tests like pca3 may provide some information about prostate cancer, the only definitive way to diagnose prostate cancer presently is a prostate biopsy.
