My foot x-ray shows no significant bone or joint lesion. gp thinks a 5th metatarsal stress fracture but pain has been easing. what does this mean?

If you have been resting that would be the reason for improvement or your doctor has immobilized the foot it is possible you have a stress fracture the clinical signs are pain and swelling it could also be stress response (bone edema)need MRI To confirm since you feel improvement I would recommend rest and some immobilization until symptoms resolve
