A member asked:

Does biliary dykskinesia typically cause gallstones and/or increase in sludge? if so, how often do stones/sludge get stuck in the common bile duct?

Dr. Amy Levin answered

Colicky pain: Gallstones/sludge cause symptoms referred to as biliary dyskinesia (not the other way around). Large stones can get stuck in the common bile duct but that usually causes severe pain and sometimes jaundice. Dyskinesia is pain that comes and goes, especially triggered by fatty food. The symptoms can be controlled with diet for a while but the best treatment is gallbladder removal.
