Bacteria in kidney: Almost all kidney infections in children r due to intestinal (fecal) bacteria entering body via urethra & bladder. From bladder bacteria reach kidney via ureters, either because child has bladder reflux (urine goes up wrong way) or bacteria are able to pass thru bladder-ureter valve because some have hair-like projections & climb like caterpillars.Rarely infection is via blood stream but do occur.

Pediatric urologist: This should be evaluated by a pediatric urologist. Kidney infections in children suggest the possibility of there being some anatomic abnormality of the urinary tract. Reflux, incompetent valves, blood stream spread of disease, and so on should be ruled out., .
