Not vein: Localized spasms in the extremities are common. It has nothing to do with your vein or artery. A blockage to the vein would result in swelling. A blockage of the artery would result in pain and ischemia to the thumb. You are likely correct in assuming some electrolyte imbalance and or dehydration.
