No: No not harsh on the kidneys. Many diabetics take metformin. Your kidney function should be checked at least once a year when on medication. When was your last Creatinine checked? Is the Cr clearance normal? It is a measure of your kidney function. Diabetes untreated can cause kidney failure. It is the disease not the medication.
