The tensor tympani: is a tiny muscle in the middle ear. Myoclonus means the muscle is in spasm, contracting frequently, up to 100 times/minute.Sometimes it is heard by other people. You are right...is IS rare. It is speculated that it is caused by stress and anxious anticipation of loud noises such as artillery fire. Treatments include relaxation and anxiety reduction/meds,along with hypnosis, acupuncture, biofeedback
