Can take a few days: Your swelling may not subside for a few days.. that's perfectly normal. I agree that the infection should be controlled before the tooth is extracted. Let your dentist monitor your condition.

Call your dentist: Call your dentist to discuss this issue and ask for his/her advice. Personally I often extract a tooth even if infection present or shortly after patient is on antibiotics. I understand not all dentists would agree with me. Incision and drainage, increase in dosage or change of antibiotic might be necessary. If fever, increased swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to ER!
