Marrow changes: There is a normal signal intensity of the thoracic vertebrae seen on T1 images, and what produces this similar signal in the vertebrae is the bone marrow. When something occurs to change the characteristics of the marrow, it will change color. Two common examples are fractures in the vertebrae which bleed into the marrow and make it darker, also certain cancers can replace marrow and be darker.
