Antibiotics and flu: Antibiotics are not active against the flu. Antibiotics are sometimes given to reduce the risk of complications in severe cases, but the antibiotics to not directly affect the course of the influenza. Tamiflu, (oseltamivir or similar med), is usually the recommended treatment. If started soon enough, it can reduce the duration of your symptoms. Average flu lasts 1-2 weeks.

Abx don't help flu: As Dr. Austin said, antibiotics are ineffective against influenza, which is a virus, and usually will do more harm than good by killing our friendly flora. Even the touted antiviral Tamiflu has minimal benefits and only helps if started close to the onset of symptoms. However, there are many herbs and natural remedies that can be very helpful.
