A member asked:

My 2 month old has small calcifications in his brain, and is sezuring. is it likely or unlikely he will develope brain damage or mental retardation ?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Likely: These calcifications are a sign indicating his brain was infected during pregnancy by one of several possible agents that damage nerve cells. The seizures reflect that damage & the changes it made to normal brain function. Eventual mental impairment could be minor or more extensive. Each case is unique. Ongoing care with a pediatric neurologist and enrollment in an early childhood program is needed
