A member asked:

I run/walk on ave 3 times/week, for the last 6 months. i use an apple watch 2 to measure my hr. my resting hr is about 80, and when i run, it can sometimes (for short times), go higher than my suggested max hr of 185 (up to 205). is this a problem?

Monitor HR.: At age 35, your maximum HR would be 220-35=185, so that’s correct. That being said, it would not be harmful for the HR to increase beyond this number for brief periods, such as if you’re running up a hill. That being said, if you start to notice this HR at rest(when not exercising)or if the HR is ever irregular, then you should seek medical attention. And you should get a treadmill stress test.

No: Almost everything you read about heart rates is subscience. I know many physicians who exercise, as I do, and I don't know any of them who pay any attention to heart rates. Different people's hearts work differently. I'm simply glad you're exercising. Best wishes.
