Floaters: You are seeing shadows cast by the jelly-like fluid that fills the eye, the vitreous. We call these floaters. New floaters can be a sign of a serious eye problem like a hemorrhage or retinal detachment.

Vitreous detachment: The clear gel that fills eyeball is attached to all parts of the inside of the eye. As we age it can become more liquid (watery) and detaches from the back of the retina causing flashes & floaters and "black spot" in vision. This can indicate a retinal tear. As the retina detaches, change or loss in your side vision is the next symptom. You should see your eye doctor to check the retina.
