Excellent prognosis: Accurate diagnosis is the fundamental first step. A specialist in the treatment of depression and bipolar illness would be best to make the diagnosis. That would be a psychiatrist.. Depending on the phase of illness - depression, irritability or mania -medications are selected accordingly . Psychotherapy (counseling) is important.

Complex Treatment: Treating bipolar disorder is dependent on age, severity of the disorder, and responses to current medications available. In general we use medications called "mood stabilizers" that keep the person's on a more even keel. Depression is the most common presentation and ongoing difficulty. Medication for the depression has mixed results. Therefore follow up is vital for bpd.
