Leg swelling: There are many medical conditions that can cause lower extremity swelling including but not limited to heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, a blood clot as well as venous insufficiency in the legs. I think you should get a second opinion to make sure he has a thorough work up and the most serious things are ruled out first.
