Needs evaluation: This sounds like a bad case of tonsillitis -so I highly recommend figuring out the cause so you can get directed treatment. The most common causes are Strep (Group A Strep), but viruses can do it too. Once you know the cause, the treatment can be best directed, and your suffering can be minimized. You also don't want any long term health effects-which is why I recommend a throat culture/evaluation

Possibly: Possibly, but strep throat would be a concern. It is wise to be seen and tested for it just over the possibility of rheumatic fever potentially being a consequence of untreated strep infection.
