HPV persistence: If the infection continues and is not suppressed by the immune system, precancerous lesion can arise. Approx risk of persistence is around 4 - 5 %. If precancerous lesions and infection persists, then early cancer and so on. Approximate risk of cancer is around 1 % if persistence of abnormal cells and HPV infection remains active.

HPV Stats: Most high-risk HPV infections occur without any symptoms, go away within 1 to 2 years, and do not cause cancer. Some HPV infections, however, can persist for many years. Persistent infections with high-risk HPV types can lead to cell changes that, if untreated, may progress to cancer. https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/infectious-agents/hpv-fact-sheet#q7

HPV and cancer: While there are many more than 100 strains of HPV, most cervical cancers are caused by just one of 4 strains. 90% of those infected with any strain will clear the virus within two years. HPV also has been linked to oral and anal cancers. For cervical cancer prevention, the Pap smear is still the best screening tool.
