Crystal joint dis: Gout is caused by a build up of crystals of uric acid. Usually this leads to an acute painful joint pain and swelling (crystal joint disease, an acute inflammatory arthritis), commonly at the base of the great toe, but it can affect other joints too, usually one at a time. Build up of crystals under the skin causes bumps on the skin called tophi.
