when i attempt to donate blood, i always lack enough iron in my blood for my height/weight group (i usually come really close to the level necessary but don't quite reach it), does this mean i should consider taking iron supplements?

Blood donation: No you need to find out what is causing this and treat that. It might be iron but can be many things.
