Some options: To avoid creating a child with both sickle cell mutations, a couple of sickle cell carriers (each person has 1 mutated gene) can: abort any embryo or fetus who has both mutations, get sperm from a non-sickle sperm donor, get an egg from a non-sickle egg donor. Also, if a couple adopts a non-SS child, they would have a non-SS child but not have created their own non-SS child.
