What you missed...: Are the muscles, synovial joints (e.g. the costochondral/sternal junction), bones and nerves that run through them, surrounding and protecting the thoracic viscera. If there is no source of pain which can be associated with the pleura, diaphragm or other internal organs, then you will need to consider the possibility of a musculoskeletal or neurological origin. Talk with your MD for more thoughts.
