Combined sleep aides: Generally speaking, if you are not feeling sleepy from the sleep aide you've been prescribed and at least 30 minutes has passed, it's okay to take melatonin. Some patients routinely take melatonin alongside the prescription sleep aide and it seems to have a synergistic effect. If the melatonin alone works for you, though, taking just that and foregoing the prescription medication is a good option.
