A member asked:

Good evening. i had bloodwork done today and tsh is 5.61. free t4 is .9. esr is 39. what do these numbers mean? will i need thyroid medication?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Thyroid tests: One would have to know what the normal values are for the lab which did your testing. If the tsh level is higher than normal and the free t4 is lower than normal, it indicates that you have an underactive thyroid and would be treated with a thyroid supplement. The sed rate is slightly elevated but this is a very nonspecific finding. Your MD can advise you best.
