Acid reflux: The most common reason for heart burn is Acid reflux from stomach to the Esophagus(Food pipe). It is a common condition affecting 15-20% of people. If you have it on a daily basis you will need to take antacids, which are available over the counter although it is a good idea to also see a medical doctor who can monitor and guide you, if it is persistent problem. Take Zantac or Prilosec at night .

Heartburn: Heartburn is caused by acid irritating the upper esophagus. Some foods can irritate/make worse heartburn such as alcohol, spicy foods. There are many antacids which are prescription free that work quite well.
