Define "anemia": There are many types of anemias. Iron deficiency is but one kind. Only iron deficiency responds to treatment with iron supplements. The other anemias do not. If there is iron deficiency in a 73 year old male alcoholic there is blood loss, probably from GI tract. There may be prolonged prothrombin time, low platelets, nutritional deficiencies, etc. Iron deficiency is not a diagnosis per se.
