It takes my husband forever for bms... he goes in and at times is in there for an hour or more, why? he says it starts and won't quit. what can he do?

Not sure: Does he "start and doesn't quit" as in diarrhea or loose stools, or does he stain to produce hard or large stools? If his stools are continually loose, i recommend he see his doc. If it is more of a constipation problem try increasing his water intake, adding fiber, and MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) stool softener to regulate.

Long BMs: When people have long bms, it usually means they're constipated. I advise my patients to increase the amount of fiber, drink lots of water, increase stringy vegetables in the diet. Get daily aerobic exercise (it helps "move" things through) and if there's any blood at all in the stool, he should absolutely see his doctor. If he's 50 or above, he's due for colon cancer screening anyways.
