A member asked:

What if my son got sore throat and fever for two days and cleared on its own, what if it was strep, does that make him at risk of rheumatic fever?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Any throat infection, including strep can improve without treatment in a few days. Any strep infection not treated within 10 days of first fever may trigger the immune response that precedes rheumatic fever. The cited risk for RF with untreated strep is 1/200 cases.
