A member asked:

Hello, so what exactly causes that excruciating pain when passing a kidney stone? is it the back pressure into the kidney from urine flow being blocked or is it the spasming of the ureters? thanks! carlos

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Ureteral colic: is thought to be caused by the stone moving and ureter muscles contracting trying to move it. Complete blockage usually causes little pain.
