Easy things first: If patients experience jaw pain, they can try taking anti-inflammatory medications, warm compresses to the area and also avoid any hard foods. If the pain persists they should be seen by a dentist, oral surgeon, or ent. The most common problem is from TMJ (an inflammation of the jaw joint), but jaw pain can be caused by much more serious problems. So it must be checked by someone if it persists.

See a dentist: There are often many causes for the symptoms described. An evaluation with a dentist who regularly treats TMJ is definately in order. Eating on only one side could actually cause increased symptoms, as chewing should be a subconscious act. Often, an occlusal splint is made and helps a lot but arthritis and teeth issues have to be ruled out. A bad bite could also contribute.
