Pediatrician: It could be a sprain or a ganglionic cyst (benign) or possibly a tumor. Although tumor is unlikely with a normal x-ray. You should take your son to his pediatrician for further evaluation and for possible referral to orthopedic doctor if the pain doesn't go away. In the meantime, please follow the directions from the ER doctor.

These nodules or cysts stretch the fibers & can cause pain occasionally but are not like a bone cancer or infection.A bone bruise might produce a similar bump but it would become hard & gradually fade over months.
