It depends...: If there is discharge, probably otitis externa, but possible middle ear (otitis media) with perforated eardrum. Rarely inner (otitis interna). Otitis externa usually is treated with antibiotic ear drops, but some might require an antibiotic by mouth. Most inner ear infection are due to viruses and don't need antibiotics at all. (No virus responds to antibiotics.)
