Hard to say: These hospitalizations are routine in such cases and more a way to document calorie intake/feeding stooling etc. They can often do some tests that are hard to do as an outpatient that will verify that all the babies systems are working okay, or find one that is not. If/when they decide it is primarily a problem of calorie (energy) intake they can design a feeding program that will help.

Complicated: Follow your doctor's instruction on feeding your baby. If you can't get your baby to eat enough normally, he may have some issues with digestion or absorption of nutrients. He may simply need a higher calorie formula or he may have something more serious. Sometimes a brief hospitalization can help determine what is causing your baby to have a hard time growing.
