Wear & tear?: There are a number of possible causes for achey joints. Osteoarthritis (wear & tear arthritis) commonly starts to cause pain in people's 50's and 60's. Often caused by old injuries or a lot of walking/running. X-rays will help to diagnose this. It is difficult to be more accurate without asking a lot of detailed questions and examining you. Your Dr sounds like they're doing a good job.

Ankle pain : Sore ankles can be due to osteoarthritis ( wear and tear causing arthritis) , gout , injury , infection . Bloods and examination would have ruled out infection and gout . X Ray would confirm osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is managed by pain relief , sometimes surgery is recommended too but not often .
