Many causes: There are many possible causes of ankle swelling depending on whether or not there was a traumatic injury and your medical history. Sprain, fracture, arthritis, gout, and infection are some of the possible causes. Followup with your doctor.

Have you had Gout?: I am not sure what tests you have had or what trauma you have sustained, but there is always a chance you may have gout. Otherwise, common sources of ankle swelling include sprain, fracture, infection or even heart problems. I would have it checked by an orthopedist to be certain. Let me know, ok?
