A member asked:

I recently broke my ankle and am unable to walk for 6 weeks. will the muscle atrophy affect my calf, quad, and gluts? how much muscle will i lose?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: The muscle atrophy associated with temporary disuse typically is for that area that is immobilized. It is doubtful that your proximal musculature - eg quads, gluts - will be totally limited. The level of atrophy will be modest but will be dependent on a number of factors including genetics. Anecdotal reports are that ingesting more protein/supplements may decrease the level of atrophy.
